YORK REGIONAL POLICE STATEMENT ON PLANNED DEMONSTRATION IN VAUGHAN

York Regional Police has been notified that a demonstration will be taking place in the City of Vaughan on Thursday, March 20.

Residents can expect an increased police presence in the demonstration area and surrounding neighbourhood.

The primary role of YRP in public demonstrations is to keep the peace while enforcing federal, provincial and municipal laws.

Police will safeguard the fundamental rights of citizens guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Human Rights Code.

Demonstrators should be reminded that freedom of expression does not include intimidation, threats of violence or acts of violence. It does not include the destruction of property, assaults, or other unlawful conduct. Citizens who participate in criminal behaviour can expect to be arrested, either immediately or at a later date.

YRP will not tolerate any form of hate, violence or the threat of violence against anyone. Hate crime investigators will be on site, and all reports of hate crime or hate/bias incidents will be investigated thoroughly.

If you witness, or have been the victim of a hate crime or hate/bias incident, report it to police immediately.

Bylaw officers from the City of Vaughan will be on site. Please note that under the City of Vaughan’s Protecting Vulnerable Social Infrastructure By-law, the City has ordered the closure of roads and sidewalks in the interest of the health, safety and well-being of the public.

Finally, YRP reminds residents that community safety is a shared responsibility.

For more information on citizens’ rights to a peaceful and lawful demonstration, visit the York Regional Police website.
