York Regional Police is proud to join organizations and communities around the globe in celebrating International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21. On this day, York Regional Police is reaffirming its commitment to advancing inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility within our organization, and in our services to the community.
“It is disappointing that recent global events have led to further division and polarization,” said Chief Jim MacSween. “But I am proud that here at York Regional Police, we remain steadfast in our commitment to breaking down the barriers that divide us, and designing policies, practices and initiatives that promote fairness for everyone.”
The organization is also proud to be hosting one of York Region’s premier celebrations of multiculturalism, its International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination event, this Saturday, March 22.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Crystal Fountain Event Space, 60 McDowell Gate, Markham. Chief Jim MacSween will deliver remarks at 11:30 a.m., to be followed by a variety of cultural performances. Admission is free and all are welcome.
This year’s event will feature community booths, diverse musical and artistic performances. The day is an opportunity for citizens and community partners to join the police service in a celebration of our diversity and a collective effort to eradicate prejudice and all forms of discrimination.
Artistic performances are expected from Sakuramai Japanese Yosakoi Dance Group, Tabriz Ensemble, Apple Creek – the Achievers Drum Corp, the Taishan School of Martial Arts, Sankalana Cultural Dance Academy, Tony Anthony and the TECO Drum Team.
In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The declaration was intended to increase awareness around the issues of racism and discrimination. Canada became one of the first countries to formally recognize the declaration when it proclaimed the day in 1989.
