A 68-year-old man from the Town of Newmarket has been sentenced after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a July 2023 incident in which a 9-year-old girl was severely injured by three dogs at his residence.

On July 27, 2023, the victim and her father had visited Leslie Theodore KOVACS' home on Jackson Court to view puppies for sale. Upon arrival, three bulldog-type dogs rushed out and attacked the girl without provocation, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The child was transported to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Following an investigation, KOVACS was charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm and three counts under the Ontario Dog Owners’ Liability Act (DOLA). He was also found to be in violation of a muzzle order issued by Newmarket Animal Services. The dogs were surrendered and euthanized after the attack.

On May 13, 2025, KOVACS pleaded guilty to all charges. He was sentenced to one year of house arrest, 15 months of probation, a lifetime ban on owning, keeping, harbouring, or residing in a home with a dog, and a $5,000 penalty under the DOLA.
