York Regional Police is alerting residents about a circulating text message scam involving fake speed camera tickets.
Fraudsters are sending text messages claiming recipients must click on a link to pay outstanding speed camera fines. These messages often appear urgent and may look official, but they are designed to steal personal and financial information.
York Regional Police is reminding the public that all legitimate traffic tickets, speed camera tickets and payment instructions are sent through the mail. York Regional Police or any government agency will never demand payment via text message.
To protect yourself, do not click on links or download attachments from unexpected text messages. Ignore any texts claiming to be ticket payment requests and always wait for official mail notifications regarding traffic violations. If you are unsure about the legitimacy of any communication, office directly using verified contact information.
If you have been a victim of a fraud and have lost money, report the incident promptly to York Regional Police either online at https://www.yrp.ca/en/online-reporting/Report-a-Crime.asp or by calling 1-866-876-5423. To report frauds where no money has been lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
