York Regional Police is reminding cyclists to follow the rules of the road after a 17-year-old was charged in connection with a collision involving a motor vehicle in the City of Vaughan.

On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at approximately 3 p.m., officers responded to a collision at the intersection of Beverley Glen Boulevard and Dufferin Street. When police arrived, they observed a white vehicle in the right-turn lane of northbound Dufferin Street and a damaged bicycle nearby. The cyclist, a youth, was being treated by paramedics on scene.

Police learned the cyclist had been riding southbound in the northbound lanes and was not wearing a helmet when the impact occurred.

The youth sustained minor injuries and has been charged with Careless Driving and Operate Bicycle – No Helmet

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, cyclists are subject to the same rules and responsibilities as motorists. To stay safe, cyclists are reminded to:

• Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic signals and signs.
• Always wear a helmet – it's required by law for anyone under the age of 18.
• Use proper hand signals when turning or stopping.
• Equip bicycles with a working bell or horn, and use lights and reflectors at night.
• Stay visible and predictable to other road users.
